Staying Motivated
Staying motivated 52 weeks of the year is tricky. Naturally, we go through phases of being really keen, where you cant get enough of cycling and are more than happy to ‘eat, sleep and breath’ the sport.
However, at other times, it can all get a bit too much and we feel less enthused about going out on our bike to train, especially when the weather may be poor.
Here are a few simple ways to remain motivated;
- Set yourself a goal that is not too far away
- Work towards that goal with a training plan, setting yourself milestones or ‘mini goals’ along the way
- Take at least one day a week where you have nothing to do with cycling, i.e. if you commute to work on your bike, don’t commute on your rest day – have a complete break
- Take time off the bike during the ‘off season’, or when suits. Maybe 2 weeks totally off the bike – no riding
- Keep it social. Ride in a group and make sure you stop for a coffee and cake
- Acknowledge when motivation is dipping slightly, and do something about it there and then. Don’t wait until your head is well and truly ‘in the shed’.
- Remind yourself why you cycle and why your goal is important to you
- Celebrate successes – a meal out when you set a new PB?
It’s all about enjoying the sport of cycling, and performing as best as possible whilst we are at it. If your not having fun – you need to make some changes!
Happy cycling!
